Do You Need a GED to Get a CDL?

Ready to take the next step to becoming a truck driver, but wondering if you need a high school diploma or GED to get a CDL? Well, the good news is that a high school diploma or GED is not required to get a CDL. Let’s explore the CDL requirements and why having a GED may be beneficial even if it isn’t a requirement.

What are the CDL Requirements?

To get a CDL (commercial driver’s license), you must pass the requirements your state of residence sets forth on their website or at the local DMV. In general, this will include:

  • Be at least 18 years old (21 for interstate travel)
  • Already have a non-commercial driver’s license
  • Have a clean driving record
  • Pass a background check
  • Prove your citizenship
  • Obtain a medical examiner’s certificate
  • Pass an Entry Level Driver Training program
  • Pass a practical and written exam

Can You Get a CDL without a High School Diploma or GED?

You can get a CDL without a high school diploma or GED, but you will need to pass a written test and then take a driving test. While it is possible to get a CDL without a diploma or GED having a high school education can help you pass the coursework necessary to get a CDL. Also some companies may require high school education for employment.

What is a GED?

A General Educational Development program, or GED, is an alternative to the traditional high school diploma. It consists of a series of tests including mathematical reasoning, science, language arts and social studies. The test includes multiple-choice and essay questions. In order to get a GED you must receive a score of 60%.

Do You Need a GED for Truck Driving School?

You do not need to have a diploma or a GED to enroll in truck driving school. However, having a GED or High School diploma may be helpful to complete the written portion of the CDL exam. Do I Need College Courses to Drive Truck?

You do not need to attend a traditional 4-year college to get a CDL. You will however need to successfully complete an Entry Level Driver Training Program to get a CDL. This new federal requirement went into effect in February 2022. You can read more about it here.

An approved ELDT CDL school will take approximately 3-4 weeks to complete. ELDT training programs must meet specific requirements based on curriculum and facilities. Including 31 theory topics and 19 behind-the-wheel (BTW) road and range skills. As a result, students must earn a minimum overall score of 80% on their theory assessments. In addition, students must show proficiency in all elements of the behind-the-wheel public road and range curriculum for them to complete this program. All DRC network schools meet these requirements.
